Life in a Thousand Worlds

A reverend's earnest metaphysical journey through a cosmos he firmly believed was teeming with intelligent life. W. S. Harris embarks on visits to the Moon, where strange beings called Moonites have adapted to consume solid air, and continues outward to Mars and Jupiter, each world presenting unique civilizations that prompt reflection on humanity's place in the infinite. This is not adventure fiction but contemplative speculation, less interested in action than in using these imagined encounters to examine the human condition. Harris approaches the universe with the faith of a theologian and the curiosity of an explorer, finding in these alien societies a mirror for Earth's own customs and limitations. The book reads as both period artifact and genuine philosophical inquiry, a window into how early 20th-century thinkers grappled with humanity's cosmic insignificance while refusing to accept it. Strange, sincere, and occasionally bewildering.
