Liesje Van Den Lompenmolen

In a quiet corner of 19th-century Europe, the Derenberg family faces a fragile future. The baroness, widowed and numerically strained, watches her modest household with anxious eyes while her daughter Nelly and son Army navigate the complicated terrain of youth, friendship, and looming responsibility. When Army develops an inexplicable resistance to visiting the neighboring lompenmolen, the old cloth mill that dominates the countryside, a crack appears in the family's carefully maintained facade. At the center of this mystery lies Liesje, the miller's daughter, whose simple friendship with Nelly becomes a bridge across the chasm of class that neither family fully understands how to cross. As secrets about their late father's legacy begin to surface, the bonds of family, the weight of expectations, and the possibility of genuine connection hang in delicate balance. Heimburg writes with quiet precision about the small moments that define a life: a hesitation before a door, a word unspoken, the particular ache of watching one's world narrow. This is a novel about what survives when wealth and status dissolve, and what grows in the unlikely soil of forbidden friendships.
