Les Creux-De-Maisons

Two soldiers walk through morning mist toward home. This is Séverin Pâtureau, returning to his corner of rural France after years in the military, eager for the familiar damp earth and honest fog of his childhood. But the homecoming carries a sting. His village has changed. His family has changed. The poverty that marked his youth has only deepened, and those he left behind are gone. As memories surface, Séverin confronts what he fled and what awaits him still. Pérochon writes with quiet, devastating precision about a man caught between the world he left and the one pulling him under. This is a novel about the weight of return, the persistence of hardship, and the resilience required to live honestly in a world that offers little. For readers drawn to literary fiction about displacement, memory, and what it costs to belong somewhere.
