Le Roi Des Étudiants

Late 19th-century Quebec comes alive in this vivid portrait of medical student life, centered on the charismatic Paul Champfort and his circle of friends. What begins as a boisterous gathering in a Montreal tavern quickly reveals its darker undercurrents: Paul carries a devastating secret, a forbidden love for his cousin that threatens to shatter both his ambitions and his friendships. When a young student frantically searches for his missing sister Louise in the shadowy backstreets of the city, the novel pivots from collegiate revelry to genuine unease. Dick captures the intoxicating freedom and precariousness of student existence in Quebec during a transformative era, where intellectual ambition collides with romantic desperation and the pressure of familial expectations. The result is a novel that moves seamlessly from comic camaraderie to genuine pathos, charting the fragile boundary between youthful invincibility and the hard lessons of adulthood.
