Le Roi Des Montagnes

Le Roi des montagnes, published in 1857 by Edmond About, is a French novel that follows Hermann Schultz, a young botanist sent to Greece to study flora. During his journey, he encounters Hadgi-Stavros, the notorious brigand known as the 'King of the Mountains,' who captures Schultz and two Englishwomen. The narrative explores themes of heroism and villainy within the context of Greek culture, as Schultz grapples with the complexities of his captor's character. The novel was translated into English in 1897 by Mrs. Carlton A. Kingsbury and has inspired adaptations, including a 1962 film.
