Le Crépuscule Des Dieux

In the dying light of the 19th century, Bourges crafted something dangerous: a novel that celebrates the beautiful and the doomed. The Twilight of the Gods follows Charles d'Este, Duke of Blankenburg, as his world collapses around him. Prussia's armies advance on his lands while he throws one last magnificent birthday celebration, a glittering display of wealth and privilege against the encroaching darkness. When the Prussian forces breach his duchy, the Duke and his eccentric family flee to Paris, where they pursue an ever-more-extravagant existence in exile. Their fate unfolds with the relentless drama of a Wagnerian opera. Bourges' novel, published just two months before Huysmans' groundbreaking À rebours, helped birth the Decadent movement. Together, these works rejected Naturalism's focus on common life in favor of exceptional, extravagant beings headed toward destruction. This is a novel for readers who want to witness the precise moment when aestheticism became a religion of doomed beauty.
