Le Bachelier

The first great novel of French student life, Le Bachelier follows Jacques Vingtras as he leaves his provincial childhood behind for the brutal promise of Paris. Armed with nothing but ambition and a fragile bravado, he discovers that freedom in the city means hunger, isolation, and the constant threat of failure. Vallès renders the terror and exhilaration of young adulthood with a rawness that feels almost confessional: here is a hero who is not heroic, who trembles at the edge of poverty, who makes desperate bargains with his own pride. As Vingtras searches for work and connection among the teeming poor of Paris, he confronts the fundamental cruelty of a world that demands you perform confidence while starving. Vallès wrote this novel from intimate knowledge of that struggle, and its power lies in refusing to soften the brutal mathematics of survival. For readers who love the unsparing portraits of ambition and failure in works like Flaubert's Sentimental Education or Balzac's Lost Illusions.
