At the start of the narrative, readers are introduced to Kalle, who reflects on his carefree childhood despite the hardships faced by his family. The opening scenes depict Kalle's longing for food and his adventures with other boys, which temporarily distract him from his hunger and the reality of living in a small, shabby house with a sick mother and younger siblings.
