Labyrinth opens on a city that functions less as a setting than as a state of mind, a winding architecture of streets that mirrors the fractured consciousness of those who wander them. Lewis Orling, newly released from the hospital where he has been住院 for months following the Great War, steps back into a world that feels as alien and hostile as any battlefield. With Poldy, a fellow patient turned companion, he drifts through urban spaces that seem to close around them, their conversations threading between memory and present moment, between the war that broke them and the peace that cannot heal them. Diamant renders their psychological landscapes with startling Modernist technique: interior monologue bleeds into dream sequences, sensory details take on symbolic weight, and the city itself becomes a living entity, oppressive and magnetic in equal measure. This is a novel about the unsaid. Lewis carries the weight of what he cannot speak, and Diamant understands that trauma lives in the spaces between words. Fire, music, masks, puzzles: these recurring images surface like fragments of a half-remembered nightmare, gesturing toward meaning just out of reach. The characters reach for connection, for purpose, for some solid ground in a world that has become unreadable. They fail, they stumble, they persist. Labyrinth captures something true about the aftermath of violence: that the war does not end when the guns go silent, that the real labyrinth is internal, and that the search for meaning may be the only meaning available. For readers of early Modernist fiction, for anyone drawn to psychological intensity and formal experimentation, this is a small, strange, genuinely unsettling masterpiece of postwar literature.
