Novels

La Regenta is a realist novel by Spanish author Leopoldo Alas, published in two volumes in 1884 and 1885. Set in the fictional city of Vetusta, it follows Ana Ozores, a woman trapped in a stifling marriage, as she seeks fulfillment through religion and extramarital affairs. The novel critiques the Church and upper-class society, exploring themes of ambition, repression, and the complexity of human emotions. Initially met with controversy for its frank treatment of sex, it has since been recognized as a classic of Spanish literature, with its first English translation appearing in 2002 by John D. Rutherford.

“Creo que fue Wieland quien dijo que los pensamientos de los hombres valen más que sus acciones, y las buenas novelas más que el género humano. Podrá esto no ser verdad; pero es hermoso y consolador.””
