La Gran Aldea; Costumbres Bonaerenses

Set in Buenos Aires during the turbulent decades after Juan Manuel de Rosas's fall, this sharp roman à clef dissects a city tearing itself between progress and provincialism. The narrator shares a household with his recently widowed uncle and the formidable Aunt Medea, a woman whose domestic tyranny is both horrifying and blackly funny. Through their home and the streets of the changing capital, López paints an unforgiving portrait of a society chasing wealth and modernity while revealing the same crude instincts that toppled a dictator. Characters with obvious real-world counterparts (a former president disguised as Don Buenaventura, a famed journalist as Don Benito) walk through scenes of social climbing, political intrigue, and domestic chaos. López, writing with the fury of a columnist who saw his nation's promise curdle into vulgarity, deploys satire like a scalpel: the humor cuts deep. The romantic plot delivers its moral lessons with period predictability, but the real power lies in the customs, the gossip, the brutal little truths about how Argentines actually lived as they built their republic.
