Kaupungin Lapsi

The city is too small for Saima. At ten years old, she already feels the walls pressing in, the same streets repeating like a lesson she has memorized too well. When she meets an old wanderer who speaks of forests so thick you can walk a day without seeing the sky, of lakes that hold the whole world upside down, Saima knows she must go. She gathers what she can carry and sets off for Kulanpää, the countryside place that exists only in stories - a wild place where the river sings and every thicket might hide something wonderful. What follows is the adventure every city child imagines: new friends, strange customs, the shock of starlight unbroken by gas lamps. But Saima also finds something harder - the loneliness of being far from home, the work that comes with freedom, the moment when the woods feel less like paradise and more like getting lost. Anttila, writing in early 20th century Finland, captures the bittersweet truth that wanting something desperately and actually having it are two very different feelings.
