Junalla Kulkiessa

''Junalla kulkiessa by Maria Ramstedt'' is a collection of short stories written in the late 19th century. Conceived as brief, readable pieces for railway journeys, it paints intimate scenes of Finnish life and nature across the seasons, reflecting on love, loss, faith, and everyday decency. The book gathers five vignettes: a lyrical tale of wagtails in Komendantinpuisto where a sudden cold snap turns spring joy into grief; a two-part marital sketch, Ensimmäinen hallayö, showing a newlywed quarrel and its tender reconciliation from both spouses’ viewpoints; Kun jäät lähtevät, in which a bedridden soul hopes to recover with the spring thaw but finds peace only in death; Muistelma, a quiet birthday evening between a daughter and her widowed father, mixing memory, pastoral care, and sober talk about marriage with the homely bustle of visiting relatives; and Kalastaja, a New Year’s Eve portrait of a fisherman and his son braving a brutal storm, returning with modest catch, choosing honesty over profit, and ending the day in humble gratitude.
