Jordens Inre

A grand vision of infinite power, a massive shaft descending into the Earth's core, a utopian city powered by the planet's own heat. At a scientific gathering in St. Petersburg, Charles Montgomery presents his audacious plan to harness geothermal energy from the planet's depths, and for a moment, the audience dares to believe. But not everyone is convinced. A skeptical engineer rises to challenge Montgomery, accusing him of borrowing ideas from the astronomer Camille Flammarion, and the hall erupts into controversy. What follows is a tension between grand ambition and hard reality, between the allure of conquering nature and the danger of hubris. Written by Otto Witt, a Swedish missionary who spent decades in South Africa at Rorke's Drift, this early 20th-century Swedish novel occupies a fascinating space between utopian optimism and scientific skepticism. It captures a moment when scientists dared to imagine radically different futures, while also questioning whether some visions are merely ambitious dreams wrapped in the language of progress.
