Jekyll-Hyde Planet

The planet Centifor has two faces. One side blooms with impossible beauty, a paradise that seems to promise everything the colonists have left behind on Earth. The other side is wasteland, brutal and unyielding. When families arrive seeking a fresh start, they discover that the duality isn't just geographic - it's psychological, moral, and inescapable. This mid-20th century novella operates on the classic science fiction premise of utopian colonization but refuses the easy triumph. Instead, it asks what happens when the promised land already contains its own darkness, when the new world is simply a mirror. The Jekyll-Hyde metaphor cuts both ways: the planet is strange, but so are the people who came to claim it. This is colonization as confrontation with the shadow self, written with the era's characteristic moral seriousness and its willingness to interrogate the human enterprise of expansion.
