Jeanne La Fileuse: Épisode De L'émigration Franco-Canadienne Aux États-Unis

At the turn of the 20th century, Quebec was hemorrhaging its young people. Thousands crossed the border into New England's textile mills and lumber camps, carrying their language, their faith, and their longing for home like contraband. Honoré Beaugrand captures this great unmooring in prose that feels like a folk song passed down through generations. The novel follows Pierre Montépel, a young man from the village of Lavaltrie who has spent a season in the northern lumber woods and returns to find his world both familiar and forever altered. Waiting for him are the Girard siblings, particularly Jeanne, whose quiet presence anchors the novel's beating heart: a love story complicated by poverty, ambition, and the terrible choice between staying put and leaving everything behind. Beaugrand writes with tenderness about what it means to carry a homeland in your chest when your body has already arrived somewhere else. This is immigrant literature before the term existed, a window into a community that built America while never quite belonging to it, and a love letter to a Quebec that was already disappearing even as Beaugrand wrote.
