Jacqueline — Volume 1

Paris, in the final decades of the nineteenth century. Jacqueline is still a girl, yet already set apart, by her striking beauty, her composed manner, and the way she captures the attention of the painter Hubert Marien at a society gathering. What unfolds is not merely a coming-of-age narrative but something more nuanced: an exploration of that pivotal moment when a young girl first perceives the adult world and cannot turn away. The stepmother's charm conceals deeper complexities, while friends and admirers orbit around her like reflections of who she might become. This is a novel examining the subtle, quiet transformations that define a life, the initial recognition of one's own agency, the premature awakening of desire. Bentzon approaches adolescent yearning and Parisian social conventions with meticulous attention, capturing a threshold moment when conventional expectations still constrained what girls could want or become. For readers drawn to the psychological nuance of George Sand or the social observation of Balzac, this offers a window into one young woman's first movements toward self-understanding.
