Jérôme 60° Latitude Nord
1927
A French playwright arrives in Norway convinced he understands the place. He does not. Jérôme has imagined this journey as something out of a Viking saga meets Parisian romance, all frost and passion and noble savages on skis. Instead he finds a country that refuses to perform the role he has written for it. The Norwegians he meets are not mysterious Northerners but reformist novelists, cheerful bureaucrats, and one especially unflappable astronomy student named Uni Hansen who treats his poetical declarations about the midnight sun with the patient amusement they deserve. Maurice Bedel's 1927 novel is a sparkling comedy of errors in which two cultures misunderstand each other so thoroughly they accidentally arrive at understanding. Jérôme's romance with Uni becomes the real journey here, a gently satirical passage from fantasy to something more durable. The humor stays light, but the observation cuts deep: we see others through the lens of what we hope to find, and sometimes what we find is better than what we imagined.
