Ioläus: An Anthology of Friendship

Published in 1902, this quietly radical anthology traces the history of friendship across human civilization, from primitive tribes through Greek philosophy, early Christian communities, and into the modern world. Editor Edward Carpenter, a socialist thinker and pioneer in early gay rights, gathers evidence from the Iliad, Tacitus, Augustine, Melville, and dozens of other sources to demonstrate that deep male bonds have always been central to human experience. The book opens with Carpenter's own preface, acknowledging how society has consistently underappreciated friendship as an institution. Through literary citations and cultural customs, Ioläus argues that these bonds transcend mere acquaintance, embodying something closer to devotion. The reference to Ioläus, Hercules' companion in Greek myth, signals the work's willingness to name what was often left unspoken. Montaigne's famous meditation on his friend de la Boëtile appears here: 'Because it was he; because it was I.' That irreducible quality of friendship the book seeks to capture. More than a historical survey, it stands as a poignant artifact from a more cautious era, when men who loved men had to speak in code while claiming to celebrate camaraderie.
