Il Busto D'oro: Romanzo

A novel written in the early 20th century. The story centers around the intersecting lives of ambitious businessmen, a beautiful but tormented woman named Hulda, and their entanglements in love, commerce, and betrayal. The primary thread follows Evaristo Grinfieri, a young man drawn to both financial speculation and romantic passion, as he navigates shifting alliances and the lure of wealth within the bustling milieu of North American enterprise. Alongside him are characters like the aging financier Francis Webb, the cautious Isaiah Wood, and the complex Hulda, whose personal struggles and relationships drive much of the drama. The opening of the book introduces Evaristo’s frustration when his mentor, Webb, refuses to support a bold financial venture, revealing generational and philosophical divides over risk and ambition. Evaristo, rebuffed, devises desperate means to obtain the money he craves, hinting at a capacity for both brilliance and moral recklessness. The narrative then shifts to present Hulda, celebrated for her beauty yet ensnared in a relationship defined by dependence and secrets, torn between Evaristo and the manipulative Guy Stein. Scenes alternate between business conversations, private anguish, and clandestine meetings, showcasing characters’ contrasting approaches to love and success. The interplay of ambition, love, and betrayal is set immediately, painting a vivid portrait of the personal and social forces at work in this layered urban drama.
