Hypatia

In 415 AD, a mob of Christian monks dragged Hypatia through the streets of Alexandria, stripped her, hacked her body to pieces, and burned her remains. She was the greatest mathematician and philosopher of her age, a woman who taught men who would become bishops and advised the city's pagan governor. Her only crime was being brilliant in an empire that had begun to kill for God. John Toland's 1720 pamphlet is less a history than an indictment.
