Homecoming

The soldier walks home through ash. That's the only direction left after World War III reduced the world to rubble, and he has no reason to go anywhere else. What he finds when he finally reaches the place he left as a young man isn't a homecoming at all - it's a excavation of absence. The streets he memorized as a child are gone. The people he loved are memories. Hidalgo constructs his narrative like a man sifting through debris, alternating between the war's atrocities and the hollow reality of return, asking a question that has no answer: what do you do when the place you were going no longer exists? This is post-apocalyptic fiction stripped of adventure or hope - just the long, quiet reckoning with what remains when everything is taken. For readers who know that some journeys end not in reunion but in the unbearable weight of standing somewhere that used to mean something.
