History of the Confederate Powder Works

George Washington Rains

1882

Engineering & Technology, History - American, History - Warfare

George Washington Rains had no business building a gunpowder factory. He was a physician and soldier, not an industrialist. But in 1861, the Confederacy needed gunpowder and had none, so Rains found himself in Augusta, Georgia, tasked with creating a manufacturing operation from nothing: no equipment, no trained workforce, no supply chain, no experience. This book is his account of that impossible scramble. What emerges is less a celebration of the Confederacy than a technician's memoir of scramble and improvisation. Rains chronicles the desperate hunt for saltpetre in church crypts and cave floors, the makeshift machinery cobbled together from salvaged parts, the explosions that killed workers, and the steady accumulation of know-how that eventually produced over two million pounds of gunpowder. There's a grim pragmatism to the prose, an engineer documenting what worked and what blew up. The enduring interest lies in witnessing an entire industrial knowledge base reconstructed under wartime pressure. Rains writes without sentiment about processes and failures, which makes the human elements, the fear and inventiveness, land all the harder. For readers drawn to how things actually get built when everything is on fire, this is a first-row seat.
