History of Electric Light

Before electric light, humanity lived in perpetual negotiation with darkness. This 1923 account traces the remarkable centuries-long journey from Thales of Miletus marveling at static electricity to the incandescent filaments that finally banished night. Schroeder weaves through the pioneering work of Volta, whose battery gave scientists their first steady source of current, and Davy, whose arc lamps demonstrated that electricity could indeed produce brilliant light. The book captures the tension and excitement of experimentation: the failed attempts, the accidental breakthroughs, the moment when inventors moved from theory to practical application. What emerges is not merely a technical chronicle but a story of human persistence against the limits of nature. The work remains fascinating for its contemporary perspective, written when electric light was still relatively new and its revolutionary impact on society was freshly visible.
