History of a World of Immortals Without a God: Translated from an Unpublished Manuscript in the Library of a Continental University

A fictional narrative written in the late 19th century. The story revolves around Dr. Gervaas Van Varken, a misanthropic surgeon who, after years of disdain and dissatisfaction with humanity, embarks on a journey to a mystical land called Hesperos, hoping to escape the ''Yahoos'' of his own world. This quest leads him to encounter a society free from mortal strife yet bound by its peculiar laws of existence. The opening of the book details the background of Dr. Van Varken, describing his oppressive upbringing and misanthropic tendencies. His journey begins in Bombay, where he meets an ancient Parsee merchant who introduces him to an enigmatic figure, the Great Magician of Thibet. With the merchant's guidance, Van Varken sets off on a treacherous journey to the mountains of Thibet to learn about a new form of existence that promises to liberate him from the burdens of humanity. His ultimate goal is to use a newfound ability, imparted by mystical forces, to escape to the planet Hesperos. The chapter concludes with Van Varken's decision to teleport himself through disintegration to the distant world, setting the stage for the ensuing exploration of Hesperos and its unique civilization.
