Hidden from the Prudent: The 7th William Penn Lecture, May 8, 1921

In 1921, Quaker minister Paul Jones delivered the seventh William Penn Lecture, and what he said was quietly revolutionary. Drawing on his years among the Ute Indian Reservation, Jones argued that the most profound truths of Christianity had been buried beneath centuries of theological complexity, and that those society deemed "prudent" and sophisticated were often the most blind to them. He challenged his listeners to abandon the intellectual arrogance that masked true faith, suggesting that humility and direct experience held spiritual insights inaccessible to the learned. This is not a polemic but a meditation on where God actually dwells: not in cathedrals of reasoning, but in the simple recognition of our shared humanity. Jones calls readers to see the divine presence in every person, to embrace love and forgiveness as revolutionary acts, and to build a more equitable world through genuine compassion rather than doctrine.
