Het Ivoren Aapje: Een Roman Van Brusselsch Leven

Set in the金钱 rot of early 20th-century Brussels, Herman Teirlinck's forgotten masterpiece opens on a son kneeling beside his dead mother. Ernest Verlat sits in a high-ceilinged room bathed in candlelight, surrounded by flowers, watching the body of Mrs. Chanteraine grow cold. But this is no simple mourning. Ernest is tortured by guilt, by memories of their fractured relationship, by the painful awareness that his grief must be performed correctly for a society that watches everything.

Teirlinck digs into the psychological wreckage of loss with surgical precision. Every memory that surfaces brings fresh pain: the words unsaid, the moments wasted, the thousand small cruelties between mother and son. Yet beneath Ernest's sorrow lies something more unsettling: his acute consciousness of how others perceive his anguish. In the rarefied world of Brussels' bourgeoisie, even grief becomes a performance.

This is a novel for readers who treasure psychological depth over plot, who understand that the most devastating stories often happen inside a single room. Teirlinck writes with the intensity of a poet and the observational sharpness of a naturalist, capturing the peculiar horror of watching a parent die and realizing you are now entirely responsible for your own existence.
