Hecuba and other plays

Euripides wrote tragedies that cut to the bone. In Hecuba, the former queen of Troy watches her city burn, her husband die, her daughters carried off as spoils of war. What unfolds is not heroic legend but raw, unflinching drama about the calculation of vengeance and the breaking of a noble spirit. The Trojan Women extends this devastation further, following the captured women of Troy as they await their fate as concubines and slaves. These are not comfortable plays. They force readers to confront war's true currency: not glory, but grief rendered into silence, dignity stripped away, the question of what any of us owe to the conquered. Euripides was the radical of ancient Athens, the playwright who questioned heroes and pitied the powerless. These plays have survived twenty-five centuries because they still feel true.
