Hatsu: A Story of Egypt

The Palace of Tears echoes with a king's final breaths, and Princess Hatsu holds her father's hand as he dies with one command on his lips: marry your half-brother and save Egypt. So begins a tale of ancient palace intrigue where a young woman must choose between her crown and her soul. Hatsu is trapped. Her father is dead. The throne demands she wed her developmentally disabled half-brother to maintain the bloodline, a union that will chain her to a man she cannot love and a life of ceremonial imprisonment. Yet in the gilded cage of the Egyptian court, she finds an unlikely ally in Miriam, an Israelite slave whose presence reminds Hatsu that freedom means different things to those who wear crowns and those who wear chains. Published in 1904, this is early historical fiction at its most emotionally raw. Fessenden writes with surprising empathy about a woman's battle against duty, exploring what it costs to be royal when the price is your own spirit. It's for readers who love palace dramas, ancient settings, and the quiet heroism of refusing to be extinguished.
