Harris's List of Covent Garden Ladiesor Man of Pleasure's Kalendar for the Year, 1788

In 1788, gentlemen carrying this small pocketbook held a key to Covent Garden's most private pleasures. Harris's List was the era's most notorious directory: a annually published guide to the capital's prostitutes, featuring detailed descriptions of roughly 150 women, their faces, figures, talents, and prices. What began as a practical catalog evolved into something stranger and more revealing: erotic prose that doubled as social history, mapping the geography of desire in Georgian London. The entries range from playful poetry to clinical assessments of physical attributes, occasionally pausing to note a woman's wit, her tragic backstory, or her tendency toward drink. Sold for two shillings and sixpence and reaching 8,000 annual readers, the List exposes an entire world that polite society pretended did not exist. It is a document of commodification, yes, but also of survival, of women navigating a dangerous economy on their own terms. The final edition appeared in 1795, its publishers imprisoned as public opinion turned. For historians of sexuality, students of London's underworld, and anyone curious about what lay behind the gaslight, this is an indispensable artifact: prurient, revealing, and historically invaluable.
