Happy House

Happy House is the bitter-sweet portrait of a woman drowning in the life she built. Violet Walbridge once had a voice that mattered. Now she tends to an unsuccessful husband, an artistic son who despises her practicality, and a household that consumes her quiet hours while she watches her literary career fade to nothing. When young journalist Oliver Wick arrives to interview the famous author, he finds instead a woman too tired to perform the joy her house demands. The novel quietly devastates in its honesty about what marriage and motherhood cost a creative woman. Violet is not a martyr or a victim; she is something more uncomfortable - a person who chose this life and cannot stop wondering if she chose wrong. Her son Paul mocks her practicality; her husband Wilson drifts through days without purpose; the house itself becomes both sanctuary and prison. Through Oliver's eyes, we see how thoroughly a woman's intelligence can be absorbed by the machinery of domesticity. Riddle writes with sharp empathy and no sentimentality, capturing a particular feminine crisis of the early twentieth century: the ache of potential unrealized, the weight of expectations that shift like quicksand. This is for anyone who has wondered what gets lost when love becomes obligation.
