Haarmann. Die Geschichte Eines Werwolfs

Theodor Lessing wrote this account in the early 1920s, when the screams were still fresh in Hanover's memory. Fritz Haarmann had just been arrested for murdering at least twenty-four young men, butchered and sold as meat to local butchers. The press called him the Werewolf, a myth he relished, but Lessing understood the label revealed something more disturbing about Germany itself. This is not true crime as spectacle but as philosophical diagnosis: a thinker watching a wounded post-war nation project its own rot onto a single body. Lessing traces Haarmann's life through the chaos of Weimar Germany, weaving his subject's homosexuality, instability, and cunning into a portrait of a man who could only exist in a society that had lost its moral bearings. The book asks an uncomfortable question: was Haarmann an aberration, or was he the logical extension of a culture in collapse? This account remains essential for readers interested in the dark genealogy of modern Germany, the birth of serial killer psychology, and the genre that would become true crime.
