Gudrid the Fair: A Tale of the Discovery of America

She was born in Iceland at the edge of the known world, and she would walk to the edge of the unknown. Gudrid the Fair is a luminous feminist reimagining of the Viking discovery of America, told through the eyes of a woman who refuses to be a footnote in her own saga. When Gudrid is just fifteen, her father Thorbeorn discovers her in an innocent meeting with a young suitor and seals her fate with a hasty marriage that sets her on a trajectory through three husbands, two continents, and one glimpse of a land no European has ever seen. Maurice Hewlett writes with the poetic intensity of the sagas themselves, layering the raw politics of early Norse settlement with the intimate psychological warfare of a woman constantly negotiating for autonomy. The prose crackles with dry wit and sensual awareness as Gudrid maneuvers through a world where her beauty is her currency and her wisdom her only true power. This is adventure literature with a woman's soul at its center: Ice and ocean, colonization and identity, love as strategy and survival as its own form of glory.
