Green Grew the Lasses

Green Grew the Lasses is a science fiction novella by Ruth Laura Wainwright, first published in 1953. The story takes place in the town of Mimosa Beach, where women and girls inexplicably turn green, leading to chaos and confusion. As the community grapples with this bizarre phenomenon, themes of identity, societal norms, and motherhood are explored, particularly through the experiences of Helen Raymond and her family. The arrival of four girls claiming to be from Venus adds to the absurdity, culminating in revelations about societal expectations when the source of the transformation, the faneweed, is discovered.
