Geoffrey Hampstead: A Novel

This vanished world hums with quiet urgency. Stinson Jarvis's forgotten novel captures turn-of-the-century Toronto through the lives of young men navigating love, ambition, and the rigid expectations of Victorian society. At its center stands Geoffrey Hampstead, a figure whose effortless charm and magnetic presence draw others into his orbit, while his friend Jack Cresswell struggles beneath the weight of both ledger numbers and unrequited longing for Nina Lindon. The Victoria Bank becomes a stage where ambition and morality collide. Jack's distracted calculations mirror his divided heart; Nina's impending return from abroad promises both hope and complication. Around them orbits Maurice Rankin, the barrister, and Mrs. Priest, keeper of their boarding house, each adding texture to a world where a man's reputation could rise or fall on a single perceived indiscretion. What endures is Jarvis's eye for the gap between public polish and private turbulence. Geoffrey's charm conceals as much as it reveals, and Jack's devotion masks deeper uncertainties about who he truly is. For readers who savor the social novels of Henry James or Anthony Trollope, here is a Canadian cousin worth discovering, one that captures a city and an era on the verge of modernity.
