It follows the life of Hikaru Genji, the son of the Emperor's favorite concubine, as he navigates court life, love, and personal relationships, despite being placed in a loveless marriage. This translation includes the first seventeen chapters, providing insight into the Heian period's aristocratic culture. The authorship of the later chapters remains disputed, making this work notable in literary history.
