Fun O' the Forge: Stories

Step into the warm, crackling world of Ned M'Grane's forge in the village of Balnagore, where the blacksmith's anvil is less important than his tongue. Ned M'Grane is the heart of this rural Irish community: a man whose way with a tale outweighs his way with a hammer, whose clever schemes and matchless wit have made him the undisputed king of the hearth. These are stories of ordinary folk navigating love, hardship, and neighborly drama with humor as sharp as a freshly forged blade. The opening tale finds Ned orchestrating a romantic subterfuge to help his friend Seumas win Nannie Boylan, battling the obstacle of a skeptical father with cunning and charm. Brian O'Higgins writes with the intimacy of someone who knows these lanes and these people intimately, capturing the cadences of Irish speech, the gentle mischief of small-town life, and the stubborn warmth of community. This is comfort reading of the highest order: tales told beside a fire, for anyone who wants to remember what it feels like to belong somewhere.
