French and Oriental Love in a Harem

When Jérôme André de Peyrade inherits his uncle's vast fortune, he expects money and property. What he receives is far more unsettling: a Turkish harem and the ghost of a man known as Barbassou, a seafaring Pasha whose exploits in the Orient became the stuff of scandal and legend. Now André must decide what to do with four beautiful women whose existence challenges everything he knows about love, fidelity, and the boundaries between East and West. The novel unfolds as both a sumptuous Orientalist fantasy and a genuine exploration of a European man confronting the sensual mysteries his uncle left behind. Written in 1893 by Mario Uchard, this forgotten gem offers a window into late-Victorian Europe's obsession with the Ottoman Empire's forbidden quarters. Think Arabian Nights filtered through a French naturalist's attention to detail, with the ghost of the real-life Richard Burton lingering in the margins. It is a book about inheritance not just of wealth, but of desire, of cultural trespass, and of the dangerous allure of what lies behind the harem's locked doors.
