Foundling on Venus

Venus is the most miserable planet in the solar system, a roiling hell of misery where human beings have devolved into something less than human. In the squalid streets of New Reno, a waitress named Jane discovers an abandoned child, perhaps three years old, alone and hungry in the chaos. Something in her responds to his helplessness, despite the brutal logic of a world that has taught her not to care. As she feeds and comforts him, the boy remains strangely silent, afraid, and then comes the revelation that changes everything. He wears a mask. He is not human at all. Yet it is precisely his difference, his hidden alien nature, that makes Jane's act of kindness so profound. In a world that has abandoned all pretense of decency, two beings, one human, one not, find connection across an impossible gulf. This is a quiet, haunting story about what it means to belong, and how kindness can bridge even the widest chasms of identity.
