Folk Tales of Breffny

Breffny is a small corner of Ireland, but its stories contain the world. Collected by Bampton Hunt in 1912, these tales come to us through a simple framing device: an old storyteller passes his knowledge to a young child hungry for wonder, the way tales have always been passed, from mouth to ear, generation to generation. The characters inhabit this liminal space between the mundane and the magical: poor old Paddy who stumbles into adventure with help from a mysterious boy in a red cap, cunning children who outwit giants and kings, fairies who move between worlds as easily as crossroads. Hunt does not ornament these stories with modern sophistication. He lets them breathe in their rough, honest telling, complete with the humor and earthiness of oral tradition. What emerges is not a museum piece but a living voice, one that still carries the particular cadence of a people who believed that the Otherworld pressed close against our own, that old men held wisdom worth listening to, and that stories were how you remembered who you were.
