Flower O' the Peach

In the vast, shimmering Karoo, a boy named Paul stands at the threshold of adulthood, watching sheep disappear into the endless landscape. The old black shepherd tells him a unsettling tale about a 'mad Kafir,' and something awakens in the boy - a hunger for mystery, for meaning beyond the dusty roads and cracked earth. When Miss Harding arrives at the Sanatorium, frail and carrying her own secrets, the quiet tensions of this small world crack open. Paul's mother, vivid in her memories of the past, and Mrs. Jakes, trapped by her failing husband the doctor, orbit around the new arrival like planets drawn to an unfamiliar sun. What begins as a boy's innocent fascination with landscape and legend gradually reveals the complicated machinery of race, class, and desire simmering beneath the surface of colonial South Africa. This is a novel about the moment a young soul first perceives that the world is deeper and darker than he imagined.
