First Lensman

Before the vast, galaxy-spanning conflict of the Lensman saga, there was Virgil Samms. Hand-picked by the enigmatic Arisians, Samms becomes the first to bear the Lens—a mysterious, living artifact that bestows telepathy and other potent mental abilities upon the 'Lens worthy.' His mission, shrouded in secrecy, is to forge a Galactic Patrol: an interstellar police force tasked with defending the fledgling 'Civilization' from the insidious machinations of the ancient, malevolent Eddorians and their proxies. From recruiting other exceptional beings across countless worlds to confronting piracy and galactic corruption, Samms lays the groundwork for the epic struggle that will define the cosmos. E. E. 'Doc' Smith's *First Lensman*, though published later in the series' run, is the foundational text, a vital bridge connecting the initial *Triplanetary* with the grand space opera to come. It's a masterclass in imaginative world-building, showcasing Smith's unparalleled knack for crafting truly bizarre and memorable alien races and the kind of hyper-escalating space warfare that would become a hallmark of the genre. For readers seeking the genesis of a universe-spanning struggle between good and evil, and the dawn of a legendary hero, this is where the cosmic adventure truly begins.
