Fire Prevention and Fire Extinction

James Braidwood founded the world's first professional fire brigade in Edinburgh, and this book is his account of igniting a revolution. Written in the 1840s, it captures a moment when firefighting transformed from disorganized chaos into a disciplined science. Braidwood recounts the devastating fires that exposed the inadequacy of existing methods, his own reforms, and the rigorous training and equipment that replaced hapless bucket brigades. But this is more than a manual: it's a memoir of a man who repeatedly rushed into buildings others fled, who watched buildings collapse with men inside, and who built something lasting from the ashes. He argues forcefully that fire prevention begins with proper building construction and public awareness, laying intellectual groundwork that still shapes building codes today. For anyone curious about the origins of the systems that protect modern cities, Braidwood's words offer an extraordinary window into a profession born of danger and determination.
