Fair to Look Upon

A late 19th-century novel that reimagines the women of the Bible as you'd never seen them before: loud, complicated, unapologetic, and absolutely refusing to be small. The protagonist, about to be married, sits down with her betrothed and, with devastating wit, challenges the comfortable notion that wives must simply obey. Rather than accept this fate, she embarks on a radical project: examining the lives of Eve, Sarah, and other biblical women to find models of resistance, cunning, and hard-won autonomy in a world designed to keep women silent. Freeley's genius lies in her weaponized humor, her narrator dissects domesticity with the precision of a surgeon while maintaining a spark of genuine romantic vulnerability. The result is both a sharp critique of Victorian marriage and a celebration of women who bent the rules when the rules demanded their submission. This is proto-feminist literature that refuses to be solemn, proving that satire has always been a woman's best defense against a world intent on containing her.
