Essays on Darwinism

Published just twelve years after Darwin's Origin of Species, these essays capture a pivotal moment when evolutionary theory was still detonating in the Victorian imagination. Thomas Roscoe Rede Stebbing, a distinguished zoologist, mounts a vigorous defense of Darwinian thought against those who rejected it without engaging the evidence. The collection tackles head-on the fierce debates dividing science from religion, natural selection from received wisdom, and the implications of evolution for human morality and meaning. Stebbing praises Darwin's intellectual honesty while dissecting the misconceptions that clouded public understanding of his theories. These are not dry treatises but passionate polemics from an era when accepting Darwin meant braving scandal. The essays move from scientific exposition into deeper waters, contemplating what evolutionary theory demands of humanity's self-conception. For readers curious about how Darwin's contemporaries grappled with ideas that still shape our worldview, this collection offers a window into a world wrestling with the same questions we face today.
