Essays in Rationalism

In late Victorian England, three brothers took radically different paths through the great question of their age: what is the relationship between reason and faith? Cardinal Newman became the most celebrated Catholic convert of the century. Professor Newman charted his own course. Charles Robert Newman wrote this impassioned defense of rationalism. This is not abstract philosophy but a family debate made public, with the intellectual stakes as high as any family dinner. Newman argues for reason as the foundation of moral and existential inquiry, challenging religious dogma while remaining engaged with questions of meaning and truth. He examines the criteria for knowledge, the relationship between freedom of conscience and intellectual honesty, and the philosophical implications of atheistic thought. His essays blend logical rigor with genuine introspection, making abstract questions feel urgent and personal. The work endures because it captures a pivotal moment in the clash between Enlightenment rationalism and religious authority, and because its central tension remains alive: how do we think honestly about the biggest questions without abandoning either intellect or meaning?
