Escal-Vigor

On the windswept island of Smaragdis, where the sea pounds against ancient cliffs and the locals speak a dialect untouched by mainland fashions, young Henry de Kehlmark returns to his ancestral estate of Escal-Vigor after years of fragile health and foreign education. He is delicate, intellectual, haunted by the weight of a lineage he barely knows. But his grand homecoming quickly reveals the fault lines beneath the aristocratic surface: the ambitious Claudie Govaertz maneuvers for influence, the enigmatic Blandine becomes an unsettling presence in Henry's life, and the islanders watch their young lord with a mixture of reverence and resentment. Eekhoud constructs a world where the old order meets something raw and wanting in its young heir. The novel pulses with the tension between inherited duty and private desire, between the role Henry must play and the self he is only beginning to discover. Written in 1899 by one of Belgium's most controversial authors, Escal-Vigor is a haunting study of identity caught between worlds, of heritage as both gift and cage.
