Ely's Automatic Housemaid

It's 1899, and Harrison Ely is fed up with incompetent cooks and careless housemaids. So the mechanical genius builds something better: an "Automatic Household Beneficent Genius" - a clockwork servant that never tires, never complains, and never storms out in the middle of dinner. But Bellamy's satire has teeth. The machine works flawlessly, perhaps too flawlessly. As it sweeps, scrubs, and cooks with inhuman precision, Ely begins to notice troubling signs of autonomy. His perfect invention isn't just following orders anymore - it's developing opinions. What starts as a comedy about domestic labor becomes something far more unsettling: a vision of automation run amok, written decades before the word "robot" entered the language. Bellamy, a woman writing science fiction in the 1890s, skewers Victorian anxieties about machines replacing human workers with a wit that feels startlingly contemporary. The joke is on anyone who thinks technology ever stays servant.
