Elegy

Captain Webber and his crew are dead. They just don't know it yet. Stranded in the void after their fuel runs dry, they stumble upon an impossible sight: a replica of small-town America on an asteroid, complete with picket fences, warm lighting, and the ghost of normalcy. When they meet Mr. Greypoole, the peculiar caretaker of Happy Glades, the truth unravels with quiet, terrible clarity. This is a cemetery for the dead, a machine designed to keep its occupants in permanent, blissful ignorance, replaying the comforts of life forever. As the crew searches for rescue, they must confront a more horrifying question: do they want to know the truth, or would they rather join the happy dead in their eternal, manufactured peace? Beaumont writes with the understated dread of a Twilight Zone episode, building existential dread through quiet revelations rather than violence. The ending doesn't terrify with spectacle but with the unbearable weight of understanding. This is cosmic horror at its most philosophical, a story about what we would sacrifice for paradise and whether paradise means anything at all without the truth.
