Een Meisje-Studentje

Two young women arrive at Leiden University to begin their studies, and nothing will ever feel the same. Else, born into wealth, and Go, who works hard to support her larger family, become roommates in a cramped attic room that smells of old books and possibility. The city opens before them like a door they never knew existed: lectures in grand halls, late-night conversations about philosophy and love, the intoxicating freedom of making their own choices for the first time. Yet the world outside still watches, still expects. Through their contrasting temperaments and circumstances, Annie Salomons captures a specific, tender truth about coming of age: how terrifying and thrilling it is to want something more than what was designed for you. This is a novel about the electricity of first independence, the friendships that shape us, and the quiet courage it takes to claim a place in a world that hasn't quite made room.
